Youth Basketball
Purpose of Tillsonburg Youth Basketball
The primary goal of Tillsonburg Youth Basketball is to keep kids active while having fun. Children enrolled in the program will learn the basics in:
Body motion,
Basketball skills and
Basketball rules
While enrolled each child will be provided a team shirt and appropriately sized basketball.
Organizers
This program is fueled by hard work from volunteers in the Tillsonburg and area community. The coordinators of the 2024 Tillsonburg Youth Basketball program are Lance Mackenzie, Jesse Goossens and Victoria Sergeant.
Volunteers
We are always looking for additional volunteers to help coach as our program is unable to run without them! We encourage parents to get involved by helping coach a team. Our general approach is to have multiple coaches for each team to provide flexibility with regards to attendance. Multiple coaches also helps when demonstrating basketball skills.
If you are interest in becoming a volunteer we do require a police check to be in compliance with the Ontario Basketball Associations insurance policy.
Age Groups
The following schedule is subject to change based on registration numbers. and volunteers. Times and locations will be finalized by September 1st. Registration links are found below.
Grades 1 & 2 will start at 1:00pm on Sunday afternoons at Annandale and will play basketball from 1:00pm to 2:15pm.
Grades 3 & 4 will start at 2:30pm on Sunday afternoons at Annandale and will play basketball from 2:30pm to 3:45pm.
New this year! We are hoping to expand our youth basketball program to include kids in grades 5 to 8. We are gauging interest at this time only. Please note that our ability to offer this session will be dependent upon the number of registrations and volunteers available. Please see the tentative registration page or reach out for more details. Those that register will be notified by the last week in August whether we will be able to move forward with sessions for this group.
When
Our season officially kicks off on Sunday, September 22nd, running every Sunday until December 15th with a break for Thanksgiving. Grades 1 to 4 will play for 1 hour and 15 minutes on Sunday afternoon. We will determine whether grades 5 to 8 will play Sunday afternoon or a weekday evening based on registration feedback.
Where
Youth basketball for grades 1 to 4 is operated out of the Annandale School Gym.
Grades 5 to 8 will be determined based on registration.
Cost
The registration cost for each child will be $150.
Activities
Players will be divided into four teams following the first session and remain with that team for the remainder of the season.
During a typical Sunday the following will occur
1. Arrive and shoot around
2. Warm up - each team's coach will lead dynamic stretching exercises teaching kids how to properly warm up before exercise
3. Skills Training Stations - teaching children basic athletic maneuvers and basketball skills
4. Scrimmage - with the overall goal of having fun and keeping active the kids will learn the rules of basketball as well as how to work as a team.
